New York Take 5 ReviewIf the massive jackpots and impossible odds of other games aren't your thing, the New York Take 5 lottery might be just the game for you.

A daily lottery with relatively small prizes but some of the best jackpot odds in the entire international lotto industry, this is a game with actually attainable prizes.

As a result, it’s a favourite among many players within the state of New York and even those who are far beyond.

Read on as we’ll find out what else makes this game so popular and show how you can play New York Take 5 online.

New York Take 5 History

Way back in November 1966, the people of New York state voted in favour of a government-operated lottery whose proceeds would solely go to support various public education initiatives across the state.

The next year, the first lottery was founded, and its original slogan “Your Chance of a Lifetime to Help Education” resonated with many people.

After all, the lottery provided them with an opportunity to become richer beyond their wildest dreams. And in the process they were also helping children receive better education and enrich their lives. What’s not to like?

The New York Lottery organization operates a handful of great lottery games within the state, including New York Lotto, the multi-state Cash4Life, Win 4, and Pick 10.

As for the Take 5 lottery specifically, it was founded in February 1992 and was initially a game with only one weekly Friday draw.

However, as the game became more and more popular over the years, it expanded into a nightly draw in 2000, a format that it still holds today.

To play Take 5, all you need to do is choose five numbers from a range of 1 to 39.

If your selection matches the set of numbers that is drawn, you win the jackpot—easy as that. There are no bonus or power ball numbers or anything like that.

Players can choose their own set of (hopefully) lucky numbers or use the Quick Pick option to have a set of random numbers be generated for them.

If no one wins the jackpot, it rolls down to the next tier—which has drastically better odds of winning. In total, Take 5 has four prize tiers.

Like with other New York lotteries, Take 5 has a handy “Play It Again” feature. This allows players to replay a set of numbers by simply presenting a previously purchased ticket to a retailer within 30 days. The retailer will scan the ticket and print out an identical one for an upcoming draw.

For regular players, another useful option is called “Advance Play”, which allows players to play the same numbers for as many as seven consecutive draws. This is akin to the subscription feature offered by most of the top online lottery sites.

When playing within New York, the price of a single ticket is $1, and there are about 100,000 daily winners.

One of the best ways to check if you’re a winner of New York Take 5 or any other lottery in the state is by using the official NY Lottery app.

This app allows you to scan your tickets, look up past draw results, find retailers, generate random numbers, and more.

How to Play New York Take 5 Online

If you’re not planning any trips to New York any time soon, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the excitement that Take 5 dishes up on a daily basis.

Thanks to the convenience of online lottery sites, you can play Take 5 (and many other lotteries from around the world) regardless of where you are situated.

These sites usually take just a few minutes to sign up with and offer an incredible lottery experience. It surpasses anything that is generally available to people who are used to just playing their local, regional, or national games.

Odds of Winning New York Take 5

The odds of winning the New York Take 5 lottery are very good, considering they’re only 1 in 575,757.

Compared to the state’s other major lotteries like New York Lotto (1 in 45,057,474) and Cash4Life (1 in 21,846,048), these are excellent odds.

However, once you factor in how small the jackpots usually are (see two sections below), the odds might no longer seem quite as exciting.

Nevertheless, they are among the best of any lottery we’ve ever reviewed. They are even better than the 1 in 850,668 odds offered by a similar daily game, Polish Mini Lotto, that we have long considered one of our favourite lotteries.

This alone makes Take 5 a truly special and worthwhile game, and the overall odds of winning are 1 in 8.77, which is also pretty fantastic.

The following table shows a breakdown of Take 5’s four prize tiers and the odds of winning each one:

New York Take 5 Drawing Time

As New York Take 5 is a daily lottery, its draws happen every day of the week at 11:21 pm EST. As such, the draws close at 11 pm EST sharp to accommodate for this.

Biggest New York Take 5 Jackpots

For every draw that takes place, 50% of the proceeds that come in from ticket sales go to the prize money, and 20% of this amount goes to the jackpot prize.

Therefore, the prizes can change in value from draw to draw, but the majority of the jackpots seem to fall into the $60,000 to $70,000 range.

That being said, here are some of the biggest ones in the game’s history:

  • $156,926: March 22, 1999
  • $78,783: March 1, 2019
  • $76,582: March 8, 2019

New York Take 5 Winner Terry SimmonsPayout Options

As the Take 5 prizes tend to be quite small, lump sums are the only logical payout option. After all, who would want to receive their $60,000 in winnings as annual instalments spread out over 20+ years?

Taxes

Unlike California and Florida, New York is one of the American states that tax lottery winnings. In fact, New York has the highest state tax on lottery winnings in the country—8.82%.

And if you’re a citizen of New York City, you’ll have to pay an additional municipal tax of 3.876%!

However, the biggest tax of all is the federal tax, which is 25%, and it applies to all winnings of $5,000 or more across the country.

If you’re a foreigner playing from abroad, you won’t need to pay any state or municipal taxes, but you will need to pay a higher federal tax of 30% on your winnings.

Depending on what your country’s tax laws are, you may or may not have to pay a second tax once you import your winnings back home. If you’re not sure about this, it’s something we always recommend our readers look into to avoid any shock later on.

New York Take 5 – Is It Worth Playing?

The Take 5 jackpots obviously won’t set you up for life and allow you to retire decades early. But the fact that the game’s odds are among the best we’ve ever seen and that its draws occur daily more than makes up for it.

Ultimately, Take 5 is an easy game to get in on that could help you sort out your financial woes or buy someone—maybe yourself—an incredibly nice gift.

And since you are much more likely to do that here than win a huge lottery like Mega Millions, Take 5 is well worth trying your luck on.

Thank you for this insightful review! I prefer to play smaller games with better odds, so Polish Mini Lotto has been one of my go-to games ever since I read your review of it a few months ago. But now I see that Take 5 is also a great game! It's a big more expensive than Mini Lotto, which has really cheap ticket prices because of the exchange from złoty to dollars, but Take 5 still seems like a good deal.
